What is Spravato®?

Spravato is a cutting edge ketamine nasal spray. Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic since the 1960s. However, recently, medical researchers and physicians have found additional uses for smaller doses of the drug, such as treating chronic pain and treatment-resistant depression. 

Ketamine consists of mirror-image molecules: S-ketamine and R-ketamine. Spravato only includes the S-ketamine molecules. Because ketamine carries some risk of abuse, the intranasal spray is only available as an in-office treatment. 

 

What is Spravato used to treat?

Spravato isn’t a first-line treatment for pain management. Dr. Bowers prescribes Spravato only when other therapies haven’t effectively alleviated conditions. For example, he might prescribe Spravato for:

What should I expect during Spravato treatment?

Dr. Bowers provides Spravato in his comfortable office. You begin by blowing your nose and then using the nasal spray. Then you rest in a comfortable chair while the medication takes effect. Some patients experience symptoms like floating, out of body sensations, tingling, and mild hallucinations. In most cases, you spend approximately two hours at Bellevue Pain and Wellness PLLC when you have Spravato treatment. 

Dr. Bowers provides personalized treatment plans for Spravato. You may need a series of Spravato treatments to effectively alleviate your pain. Depending on your condition, you might need to have occasional follow up treatments to maintain your pain relief. 

 

Is Spravato safe?

Spravato is safe. Not only is it FDA-approved, but when you use the nasal spray, Dr. Bowers or a member of his clinical team observes you until any side effects of the drug wear off. They don’t release you to go home until it’s safe, and you have a friend or family member to drive you home. Also, while you will be tired after your treatment, you should be back to your normal energy levels after a good night’s sleep.
